11-27-06 Meeting

To do:

Need Storyboards for:
- Experiment Song: We need to work on storyboard and add dialogue. Need to work out the way the experiment goes before Bob starts on song.
- Multimedia group will storyboard out the 3 songs (Bacteria, Washing, Agar Plate).

Bob:
- Make changes to Hypothesis, Bacteria, Washing, Agar Plate songs
- Take the 3 approved song (Bacteria, Washing, Agar Plate) to next level which will be to ceate rough orchestrated songs. He might come in to record next Monday (12-3-06) or bring in the rough songs 12-10-06. Bob will contact Matt to let us know which Monday he will come in.
------------------------------------
Bacteria is the Cause of Food Borne Illness: approved, few minor changes from Randy.
• Change lives inside you to lives around you – replace inside with around

2nd spoken section
• Include how we can get bad bacteria by number of ways – Cook (raw not cooked properly… clean, separate, chill)
• It took scientists a long time to discover that some tiny bacteria –add the word some

Washing Removes Bacteria: Approved
Build up the wash your hands x 3. Multiple voices

Agar Plates can be used to Culture Bacteria: Approved
• Song: add the Petri dish and lid but not as a break out -– Petri dish has a lid and is a controlled environment. Nothing touches it before and after. Isolate the bacteria we want to grow. Lid keeps it clean so if there is any growth we know what is growing.

• Song: add one becomes a 1000 and 1000 to a million and if that doesn’t fit into song use a million becomes more.

Animations with Agar plates – make sure to show lids on top before and after the adding the culture

Doing Experiment Once isn’t Enough:
Need to storyboard out again and add dialogue that is closer to a final piece.
Need to decide how the experiment will start
Start with the 4 questions the start “what do we have to do an experiment”
Pirates: make them similar so there isn’t so many variables. Remove the very clean looking pirate.

Bob will wait for new storyboard and dialogue before starting on song.
Things to keep in mind for new song:
- can't use the word "prove" but can use learn, what we know.
- The song needs to emphasize multi subject needs to used not multi experiments.

Hypothesis and Observation:
According to Randy, hypothesis starts with prior knowledge.
Tiki 1: observing and prior knowledge, learn from what other people have started then begin on what you want to know.
Knowledge leads to questions, which leads to hypothesis – experiment leads to knowledge and more experiments.

Tiki 2: reword the “the answer to a statement you can test” change to Prediction based on questions you have asked that you can test.
Move this verse to last.

Tiki 3: emphasis observe and knowledge and form hypothesis and use experiment to test hypothesis which gives more knowledge and sets the stage for more questions and to learn more.

Spoken section Tiki 1: hypothesis is a statement... Barb will reword to be shorter.

11-20-06 Meeting with Bob

11-20-06 Pirate Songs modified

Songs will be done in flash animation
Bacteria and wash songs are ready to send to Randy but on wait on creating the animations until songs are approved.
---------------
Bacteria song:
Ready to take to next step and storyboard.
Convey the pirate curse during the song:
– Convey visually the pirate curse, tie the sickness with the pirates going to bathroom and not washing their hands.
– In the song mention the curse during the "But some are just plain nasty, and can make you very sick
If they get inside of you".

In the song: After the lyric “Took science long time to discover that tiny bacteria can make us sick…” We need to explain that how the food can get “in” us… dirty hands, bad food, uncooked touching cooked, etc.
- touching or coming into contact with something dirty (utensil) something contaminated not just eating bad food.
- if something with bad bacteria touches your clean food.
Bob will create a ditty about “How bad bacteria gets in us (dirty hand, plates, knife used to cut meat and cutting bread) & more complete review of the temperature cook, clean, separate, chill…

Change to “When we eat bad bac”?? (ask Barb)
---------------
Washing Removes Bacteria:
Approved by Barb. Ready to be melodized, and storyboarded.
Washing refers to hand washing.
WIll be sung after you visit the hermit.
Sung by: Tiki.

In verse “Perfect place to grow is IN you” change to …grow is ON you.

In the song: “You and me can do it too” – add in “well not us since we don’t have hands” since it is the Tikis singing and they don’t have any hands. Just for fun
---------------
Agar Plates can be used to culture bacteria
Sung by: 2 proper rats and agar backup
---------------
Hypothesis and Observation: not Randy ready
Sung by: Tiki after the STMT game.

Add to the song lyrice and visually a hypotheses from the STMT. For example, I observed that the grapes made the monkey jump, bananas he turns right and apples he turns left… My hypothesis was that a grape banana smoothie blend would make the monkey jump up and turn right.

In the song take out that it is a question
---------------
Doing an Experiment One Time isn’t Enough:

Gave Bob storyboard for Experiment
Add into song the cook handles raw food and has lots of bacteria on his hands.

Storyboard:
4 questions fill in the blank areas – check with Randy if ok to if we do the following
• Remove questions for now
• Could be made into supplementary item
• Keep the hypothesis
Don’t mention control
Add spit and wipe group

The experiment will start when the player hits the swab button and is interrupted with a short phrase something like Doing the Experiment one time isn’t enough… and song starts.

11-13-06 Song Meeting with Bob

Issues from the meeting:
Songs need to be stand alones. Have the songs accessible and make sense without the games. Create a menu just for the songs.

More info buttons for the songs - For each song Barb thought there could be a “for more info” buttons, which will allow the player to get more information about the subject related to the song. The information could be just text that Randy sends.

-------------------------------------------
For Next Meeting Monday 11-20:
Bob will bring revised songs:
• Bacteria is the Cause of the Food Borne Illness
• Washing Remove Bacteria
• Agar Plates can be used
We will provide to Bob:
• Storyboard on Handwashing Experiment so Bob has a better understanding of the experiment
• Opening – have more details and information for the opening. Songs for this section. The song for the opening can wait until later.

Next step:
Review and approve the revised songs.
-------------------------------------------
Songs Bob brought into the meeting: Review and changes needed:

Opening: can wait until later
• Bob needs to know how long is the narration for the opening
• Does there need to be music before and after narration

Bacteria is the Cause of the Food Borne Illness:
• Will be sung by: Scientist/Hermit, Carl, and rats.
• Don’t send to Randy until Bob makes changesto the song.
• Changes needed:
- Need to add more about food borne illness and how bad bacteria is related to food borne illness.
- Bad bacterias are on your hands and on your food – Explain more ways on how you could get bad bacterias. In Randy’s text there is a line about how you could get bad bacteria on your hands “If you touch raw meat, or if your hands are dirty from taking out the trash or playing in the grass, dangerous bacteria can get on your hands”.

Washing Remove Bacteria:
• Remove the lyrics about “bacteria jumps onto you”

Agar Plates can be used to culture bacteria
• Will be sung by the squeaky clean proper rats with Agar plates as backup
• Agar plate animation can get started
• Need to add if there are any bacteria there, there will be growth in the agar dish. The amount of growth in the agar dish corresponds with how much was initially added to the plate.

Doing an Experiment One Time isn’t Enough:
• Sung by the first mate
• Emphasize the number of subjects & individual in the experiment
• This isn’t about you proving what you planned but is about proving or disproving the hypotheses
• Bring back the phrase “one is not enough”
• Send to Bob Narration & details of the experiment – give to Bob next Monday Storyboard out the experiment –
• Bob will name the pirates to in the experiment so the names won’t hinder creating the lyrics.
• Make sure to put filthy Pete in the clean group.

Hypothesis and Observation:
• After exiting the STMT
• Content, observation, hypothesis, and characteristics of a good research question, all in one song.
---------------------------------------
Bob’s 1st pirate song: we need to meet and discuss to talk about where to put the song.
Initially thought when player first arrives on the island sung by the Tiki welcome but the songs doesn’t feel like a Tiki would sing and might have too many songs right at the beginning. The welcome to the island Tikis could just talk- short blurb welcome to the island…

11-06-06 Meeting

To do:
• CC - See if the Flash movie of the experiments will work in shockwave for IV DV
• Group - if CC says yes it works, start on creating the IV DV graphics and animations
• Matt - Preloader samples, assets list & map of the island send to Barb
• Barb - email Randy for iinformation about: Not a curse; science is the answer. Hypothesis & observation. Constant
• Barb -if the content of the 4 paragraphs teach kids what they need to know when they get to hand washing experiments.

------------------------------------------------------
4 paragraphs from Randy:
• Bacteria is one cause of food borne illness (sung by Carl or tiki in Carl’s hut),
• washing removes bacteria (after leaving Carl’s hut sung by tiki),
• Agar plates (in the lab),
• Repeat experiments several ties (sung by? Start of hand washing experiment).

• The paragraphs will be sent to Bob without modifications to the text.
• Need to find out from Randy if the content of 4 paragraphs teach kids what they need to know when they get to hand washing experiments.
------------------------------------------------------
IV DV:
Reviewed the experiments from Randy and we all like.
Need to fix wording and make more consistent.

Cave 1-3 starts with the introduction to the process. A tutorial of a sort – we go through and do one experiment to show them what is constant, IV & DV
Each cave will have 5 experiments

Cave 1: some things change and some don’t change: which are constant and variables.
1st experiment: Intro where we show them a sample
2nd experiment: Find constant in table form to pictures
3rd experiment: Drag pictures
4th experiment: Drag text
5th experiment: Multi choice forms

Cave2: dependent variable
1st experiment: Intro where we show them a sample – here are the constant and variables and now look at the variable Cause and effects
2nd experiment: Find constant in table form to pictures
3rd experiment: Drag pictures
4th experiment: Drag text
5th experiment: Multi choice forms

Cave 3: Independent Variable
1st experiment: Intro where we show them a sample – what I change
2nd experiment: Find constant in table form to pictures
3rd experiment: Drag pictures
4th experiment: Drag text
5th experiment: Multi choice forms

Cave 4:
No intro
All multiple choice 5 of them

Feedback/ game play response
• Need feedback/game play response for each experiment.
• Type of feedback: Great job. Almost… Things that stay the same are constant…
• Feedbacks could be pop up or parrot

------------------------------------------------------
Preloeader comic panels
Possibly have students in Barb's class write content for some of the panels
