9-26-06 Pirate mini retreat

Hand washing experiment:
Washing hands is effective. Could use a vague narrative – “ Yes, we are not getting sick as we used to get...”
Wash hands according to the USDA recommendations.

What we need to set up:
• How do we measure bacteria?
• How to count bacteria
• Identify the experiment and state hypothesis
• Need to explain why multiply pirates are needed and not just one
• Not a curse

Pre test:
Swabbie or Howard Hughes like Hermit could be used to explain the items in pretest (The pretest will be a narrative)
• Bacteria cause illness.
• Washing hands might remove bacteria but pirates aren’t washing. "Curse is not a curse – prove it"
• What is an agar plate – hermit might explain.
• Sample Size

Make case to captain:
Identify the following: Dependent Variable, Independent Variable, Constant & hypothesis.
DV - bacteria on plates, IV – wash hands or not, Constant – pirates and washing.
Player will need to identify these correctly first before moving on into the game.

The Game:
1. Pick pirates- divide into 2 groups or keep one big group - ask Randy.
2. Swab, wash (USDA recommendation), swab again: if use 2 groups, one group washes and other doesn't.
3. Wait 24 hrs
4. Interpret data
5. Report to Capt.

Randy
• if we need 1 or 2 gouprs for testing in DV/IV
• Write blurbs
• What is the ideal sample size
• Pre/post or control
• How he will guide us in interpretation
• What is the hypothesis
• Review the IV/DV

Assessment – a possible assessment
